As it is harmful to health, obesity can be considered morbid in the same way as overweight is more generally. But unlike an illness linked to a virus or bacteria, the causes of morbid obesity and obesity arise from an unresolved intrapsychic conflict: they are psychological.
In other words, morbid obesity is a symptom that can be cured through psychoanalytic psychotherapy .In Paris or elsewhere, getting over obesity therefore requires psychological treatment which makes it possible to treat the unconscious causes of obesity.
Treating morbid obesity through psychotherapy
Rather than considering psychological disorders as illnesses, in psychopathology we speak of psychological structures to clarify the nature of the unconscious conflict at the origin of the symptoms. If the neurotic structure is currently the most represented within the population, it is therefore not impossible to consider that the increase in morbid obesity within the world population (considered by the WHO as a real epidemic) finally reveals the weight of neurosis within world society. And beyond morbid expressions such as obesity and overweight, neurosis can also be expressed in lack of self-confidence, obsessions, insomnia, etc.
As we discussed in our article on the causes of morbid obesity , the latter cannot be treated with methods of relaxation or narcissistic reassurance. These techniques which use suggestion and conditioning (CBT, coaching, sophrology, hypnosis, etc.) can at most soothe the deadly compulsion, temporarily, they can even shift it into another morbid expression, another symptom, but they do not can in no way allow a person to truly escape morbid obesity.
The question that then arises may be the following:
How to get out of morbid obesity through analytical psychotherapy with a psychologist?
The term analytical psychotherapy is as much a pleonasm as the expression morbid obesity. It refers to the psychoanalytic method by which psychotherapy makes it possible to resolve the unconscious conflicts which are at the origin of psychic, bodily and organic symptoms. This method discovered by the inventor of psychoanalysis has a name. It is called the method of free association. We have developed on several occasions how free associations allow us to escape from the intrapsychic conflict which feeds the symptoms, particularly those of obesity. By following this rigorous method, morbid obesity will dissipate as the patient or psychoanalyst associates his thoughts freely. By discovering the unconscious causes that push him down a path that is harmful to his health, he will be able to build a new relationship with his existence, with his body and with his desire.
Whether the patient discovers a guilt present since his early childhood, whether he brings up buried anger which turns against him or whether he begins to heal a wound that he had forgotten, so-called analytical psychotherapy will allow him to reveal the hidden causes of his morbid obesity and in doing so, to recover from it.
Contrary to a fixed idea according to which morbid obesity is a question of will, this symptom reveals, just like the compulsion which pushes a being to smoke or to take drugs, the weight of unconscious desire in human symptoms.
It is therefore by discovering this unconscious desire through analytical psychotherapy that morbid expressions such as obesity can truly be cured.
